SPRAVATO® is the only FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression, used alone or alongside an oral antidepressant.
It may help relieve symptoms of depression when other antidepressants have not been effective
SPRAVATO® is the only FDA-approved nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression.
It is an NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor antagonist that may work differently from traditional antidepressants by targeting glutamate.
- The exact way it works is not fully understood.
Glutamate is a chemical messenger in the brain believed to play a role in mood regulation, though its exact role in depression remains unclear.
Limitations of Use:
- Not intended for pain relief or use as an anesthetic.
- Safety and effectiveness as an anesthetic are unknown.
- Not proven to prevent suicide or reduce suicidal thoughts or actions.
- Not a substitute for hospitalization when deemed necessary by a healthcare provider, even if symptoms improve after the first dose.
- Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.

- Adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder who are experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors
What is TRD?
Treatment-resistant depression occurs when symptoms do not improve after trying at least two different antidepressant medications at the right dose and duration.
Research shows that about 30% of people with depression meet the criteria for TRD.
